Deathsmiles Review

Photobucket

Deathsmiles is a horizontal "Shmup" released for the Xbox 360 by famed Japanese developer, Cave. The North American version is a collection of the original arcade, Xbox 360 mode with enhanced visuals, A special 360 controller version called Version 1.1, and then all three modes with the added Mega Black Label mode. MBL was a limited run of 150 cabinets that had a harder difficulty and an extra character.

In the game you play as one of 4 (or 5) witches that play through 7 levels in the mystical world of Gilverdo. The game has a fun gothic art style and the enemies are very unique, like the Giant Zombie Cow or Tyrannosatan. At the end of the game there is a decision to make that decides if you stay in Gilverdo or go through a portal to the "Real World." The decision doesn't matter too much, but each ending has an achievement for each character for a slew of points possible for replaying the game.

While the game is only 45 minutes long, the re-playability factor is very high. There are so many different modes and difficulties and online co-op, that for a Shmup fan, the game will be hard to put down. While I had a great time playing this game and would recommend it to everyone, I could see the average gamer having a hard time dropping $50 for it. If you ever see it on the shelves for $20-$30, pick it up, you won't complain.
