Realism Hurting Creativity?

This is something I have thought for some time; creativity and risk taking are slowly making their way out of the gaming industry.  Granted a few games are finally coming back with the flair of being a "video game" and not a simulator of sorts on the genre.  The main problem to me seems to be that the current era of gaming is trying to be too realistic, and when  a game is not this uber real world or set-up, people go back to the core/casual debate and instantly turn it down.  Take for example someting like Borderlands.  The game played like a great arcade shooter (Call of Duty) but did not take itself seriously in pretty much everything else.  Borderlands was a solid shooter, but nobody seems to have noticed that as much as they should have because it has "cel-shaded' graphics or isn't some abstract take on a real thing.  Take Mario Galaxy 2; that game will be toted as a kids game even though back then, that was a super core title to most people.  The amount of creativity and design in that game is fantastic, yet so many people right it off because it's not that new hardcore shooter with realistic physiscs and "maturity".  Even Vanquish falls into this catagory with its over the top fun style gamplay.  The basic point is that I think the industry needs to get back to making more interesting games, more diverse and creative games rather than just making a new something of something thats already out currently - just focus on bringing new ideas to the table, or taking some risks on some new IP or something.
