2010 had some fantastic games, and 2011 looks even better. But, let's not get ahead of ourselves now. I'm going to look back at 2010 and pick some of my favorites and overall Game of the year.
Let's get started! I will be counting down from Ten
10 - Singularity
This game too me, was VERY under appreciated and nobody knew it even came out. I kept my eye on it ever since I saw it on the cover of Gameinformer a while back. It reminded me of the first Bioshock mixed with Half life 2. The shooting was good, story was very unique, and the atmosphere really sucked you in.
9 - Battlefield: Bad Company 2
I was VERY late to the party on this game, I just got it on the Steam sale and the multiplayer has blown me away. Medal of Honor WAS going to be my number 9, but Bad Company 2's multiplayer blew me away. It's hectic, addicting and overall just a solid shooter. I've never bought a game just solely for multiplayer before, and this game was be my first.
8 - Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
A fantastic edition to the MGS series and a good ending to the Big Boss saga. It looks beautiful on the PSP, the controls were just about as good as they can get on the system, and the story was solid. I just felt that it depended too much on playing with a friend, and would have enjoyed it more on PS3. Heck, even PS2!
7 - God of War 3
Do I really need to say ANYTHING about this game? Insane over the top action, the story of revenge, wonderful graphics, tight controls, and the ending to Kratos and his story. I loved every minute of it.
6 - Heavy Rain
An interactive story that YOU control. A wonderful idea, and while not perfect, it really showed we are able to pull this off now. With multiple ways to play the story, and many different endings, it was really a wonderfully crafted game.
5 - Modnation Racers
I LOVE Kart racers, and when this came out mixed with user created content I was so happy. It controls wonderfully, and the track editor is extremely deep and easy to do. Even if you don't want to create tracks, karts, and characters there is enough that people already made you can download and enjoy.
4 - Red Dead Redemption
I was let down by GTA4, but Red Dead erased any doubt I had with Rockstar. It was such a fantastic open world set in the Wild West, almost perfect. The story was well crafted, I found myself caring for the characters, and the shooting was spot on.
3 - Metro 2033
I got this on PC a while back, and instantly loved it. Playing this game on DX11 full settings, you really realize how much further ahead PC gaming is than console gaming. It's gorgeous. The game is based on a book, simply called "Metro 2033" The shooting isn't perfect, but it has a neat twist, the bullets are your currency. So you must always be cautious with what you buy, AND shoot. The story was incredible and felt myself drawn in RIGHT away. The game is challenging, and isn't short either. I would reccomend this to anyone with a PC that can handle it. It's really a nice game to show off to your friend's what your PC can really do! ; )
2 - Enslaved
I never did play Heavenly Sword, but I was always told Ninja Theory really knew how to show emotions in their video game characters, and Enslaved proved that too me. You could really see what the characters were feeling with their eyes and it blew me away. While the combat was clunky, and the camera annoyed me, I couldn't get over how much I enjoyed the story and gameplay. (Think Uncharted climbing) it was too short, and I wanted to keep going after the credits rolled. I can only hope for a sequel.
1 - Mass Effect 2
Yes, I'm with a lot of people on this one. Mass Effect 2 is simply the best game I played in 2010. I first beat it on my xbox 360, but after I sold my 360 and everything with it (See older blog concerning why) I HAD to replay the game, and I was not going to wait for the PS3 version. So I decided to get Mass Effect 2 on PC. But not until I beat Mass Effect 1 on PC so I could transfer my gamesave. Which of course, I did. After playing ME1 and going right into ME2, I really appreciated how much better ME2 really is. The story is on par, IF NOT BETTER than Star Wars, the combat is Gears of War, the graphics look solid, and EVERY decision you make really effects the outcome of the story. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys shooters or action RPGs.
And as a special bonus...HONORABLE MENTIONS!
Medal of Honor - EA's shot on a modern FPS to bring down Call of Duty. Solid SP and a good MP much different than CoD, I only wish the game had a few more months of polish instead of trying to beat Black Ops to the punch, I'm hopeful for a much improved sequel.
Fallout New Vegas - While essentially Fallout 3 with more story and less exploration, they fixed up any problems with Fallout 3 and did craft a believable wasteland. I just wish it wasn't so buggy when it was released...
Transformers: War for Cybertron - The Transformers game I've always wanted to play. Awesome voice acting, sweet story, and pretty much a 3rd person shooter. I just wish it wasn't so short.
There ya have it. My favorite games of 2010 in list form. Feel free to comment and disagree or agree. Bring it on 2011!
WHY IS ANGRY BIRDS NOT ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
