With the demo being out for Bulletstorm, we finally get a taste of what it's like to "kill with skill". You get to try out the Echoes mode which is playing through a section of the level and trying to get the best score run for the level. It's great because you always see that leaderboard at the end, and comparing that to what your friend's got really drives you to keep playing and beat them. It's the same feeling I got with Geometry Wars; having that leaderboard at the forefront of the experience keeps the drive to destroy the high scores on it.
When I first played the demo all I thought was, yeah ok, this is a fast shooter with some Madworld mixed in... will it feel as repetitive? Will the score based killing feel not needed for progression of the game? But once you see that your score was 7600 and your buddy's is 8126, you try and find the best exploits to rack up your score. So when playing the single-player, I feel like they really need to make the whole points system have that kind of purpose. Have that score leaderboard be a thing for the campaign as well.
Perhaps though, the story progression of the game will be great because of all the crazy bosses and super fast gunfights, but I really feel like beating other dudes' scores is the drive of the game. I played that demo at least 10 times because of that.
Well, come the end of the next month we will really see, but I hope this game sells well, because overall, its fun as hell.
