Surprise, Surprise

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company's upcoming system, the Wii U, will not play DVD or Blu-Ray movies. Given Nintendo's past with this type of functionality the announcement shouldn't catch anyone off guard, and it's safe to assume that manufacturing or patent costs are the main drivers of this decision. I can understand the lack of Blu-Ray, but no DVD playback? The technology is so old and so cheap, why not just include it? Don't you think customers who are interested in a Wii U would enjoy an all-in-one box?

I really hope this isn't the beginning of repeated mistakes that Nintendo made with the Wii.

  1. I completely agree! I think it's absolutely preposterous that Nintendo isn't including the minimal of DVD playback. Just because they have Netflix available doesn't mean they shouldn't make it available to customers. I really don't see this console being worth the buy at all. Even with the processor being stronger than the 360 and PS3. I honestly believe they are just repeating all the bad decisions they made with the Wii. There's also the fact that Crytek is working with Xbox on Timesplitters 4 for their next console. I will laugh hysterically if Microsoft and Sony launch new consoles two years after this one releases, leaving Nintendo in the dust yet again.

  2. I think that Nintendo's consoles are all about their software, and that's why people buy it. HOWEVER, if they want it to be the living room entertainment device, that includes watching movies
