There are a ton of reviews out there for the new Resident Evil. There are quite a few bad ones, and enough good ones to score it about a 7/10 on Metacritic. I've been reading a lot of comments on reviews and listening to a few friends who have picked it up, and it's crazy to me how blind a lot of people can be.
My friends enjoy it; some are flustered at reviewers going nuts and hating on the game.
Commenters are in a rage about the low scores.
Both are angry the game isn't "getting it's due" or whatever.
I got the early demo that came with Dragon's Dogma, and I really kinda just felt like the game needed some serious polish. After getting the public demo, I still saw the same issues as before and it cemented my thought that I'll just play it when I play it - not in any hurry.
My complaints stem from a few things. The camera is way to close to your character, the infected barely react to your bullets and the mechanics have no idea what they want to be. The game has a slight identity crisis - it knows what it wants to be, but doesn't know how to get there. It wants it all. The user interface was kinda odd too, good in some ways like being able to switch between items fast with the D-Pad, but confusing that all of the campaigns had a different HUD and you couldn't change your options for anything by pausing the game. My biggest complaint though is that this game just lacks tension. I would squirm and get tense and crazy at the beginning of RE4 with the chainsaw man! I didn't feel it as much here.
I am not one to think that the game is terrible, and I can see why people are still enjoying it. Resident Evil as a series is moving a way from survival horror, and that is totally alright. It makes sense. The story in the games moves itself in this direction and it only makes sense that the game will evolve into this. So yeah, I get why the reviews are being so harsh, but people keep forgetting that the game has a good overall average for what it is. The game is trying to appeal to a lot of different players and in turn seems to be not taking enough time to focus on each idea in the game.
These are just the thoughts I have been having when listening and reading all of this crazy stuff in the last few days. I want to still give it a go, and will eventually, and when I do I'm sure I'll write a quick review. I hope that some things change my opinion on the game, and if they do, cool I'm OK with that. I just wish everybody could get back to liking what they like and forget about whoever else didn't like it.
