Looking Back - E3 2013

For some reason I never got around to coming here and jotting down some thoughts.  I did want to wait for the smoke to clear, but in doing so I got distracted by all sorts of other stuff.  Some of which we shall get into.

I'll do this in short here.

Microsoft had a great showing in games.  It sucked that the policies we were all saddened about were still being defended harder than ever, but obviously that didn't stick.  The reason I like waiting for the smoke to clear is for this reason alone.  Microsoft realized that they could not stick with what they wanted; and while that did hurt some of their good ideas, overall, it was a necessary step to give gamers most of what they wanted.  It's nice to see them listening (not really us "gamers" mind you, lets be honest here) and changing their policies (read: restrictions) but the damage may have already been done.  I still hear the average person being upset about what was and not even knowing that this stuff has changed.  However, with the strong exclusives they had there - Titanfall, Halo, Killer Instinct, Forza ext - and the Kinect being fully utilized, this could easily be turned around for them in the long run.  They kept the race going.

Sony did well at keeping their message clear - they are here for gamers.  And while overall their conference didn't show much new as compared to Microsoft, there "1-2-punch" was the highlight of the show.  By exclaiming the exact opposite of Microsoft with concerns of used games and sharing content and all of that, they won over a lot of dedicated fans of the Xbox as well as cemented a strong start in this new generation.  While now the gap is closer with Microsoft going back on a lot of the bad, Sony still has the upper-hand by being pro everything we wanted to begin with.  Indie devs have a nice home!  One thing I will say though; every time I see Beyond: Two Souls, I get more confused about what this game will end up being haha.

Nintendo needed to bring more to the table to pack a bigger punch, however, what they had was a solid line-up.  While many think that they had to pull out all the stops to stay relevant, I thought some people kinda missed out on what we got.  Mario 3D Worlds may not have been the Mario game we all wanted (I had higher expectations to be honest), I actually got to play it and it was a blast.  Looks sharp too!  And speaking of looking sharp, that new Mario Kart they had is the sharpest game I might have ever seen!  It sucks that what they had is a bunch of great games that we all want, but yet most people feel that they didn't do what they needed at the same time.  Also, while the Wii Fit trainer is a dumb thing to make people wait 45 minutes to wait around to unveil, people forget that she is kind of a perfect fit for the sillyness of that series - Mr. Game & Watch anybody?

Ubisoft once again showed that they can really put out some great stuff and steal a good amount of attention.  While Watchdogs maybe have been the cool game last time, after seeing them show The Division, that's the game we all want!

EA - Can I just have Battlefield 4 now?  It would keep me company while I wait for that Mirror's Edge reboot (not a sequel?) that will release "whenever it's ready..."

All in all it was a fun show.  And while I wish I would have done this when it was more relevant and my take was much more fresh on it, all of these things still play so whatever.

And as always, stop being so crazy with your love of any of your camps - I wouldn't say anybody had a terrible showing and whatever your purchase this holiday may be, you have great things to look forward to.

P.S.
I know a lot of people like to fight about the $100 price difference between the PS4 and Xbox One ($399 and $499 respectively), but you take the Kinect out of the box and I'm sure we would have seen the same prices.  Also, I know that people are pointing out that Sony pulled the camera out of the box last minute to knock down the price and are using that as a form of fanboy attack, but that's just smart tactics - it's fair to say that they Move support and Camera support will now be effected and not utilized as nice as the Kinect, but personally, that Kinect never once made my entertainment more enjoyable, and in fact actually made almost everything worse - with and without.
