I decided to go back and mess with Destiny a bit on the PS4. I think the things that we can all agree on are how good it looks and how good it feels. The shooting and the moment to moment encounters have always been solid for this game, but sadly, it still feels disappointing. This is not because of the gameplay, but more so because you can see the potential this game has if it weren't for the design in progression. Now, I would agree that we all approached this game with different expectations, but I also feel that maybe those expectations were sort of set for us as well. Claiming your game to be this 10 year large scale online persistent world makes you think more MMO style, and even ways this game presents itself are MMO in idea s well, but this game is basically just missions where in the normal area, you might meat up with another guy wondering around and party up. It all just feels half baked. I also want there to be a solid story, and I can live without it if the missions and structure connected in a more meaningful way, and even the story element is half on a website. It's all just so odd.
I feel like Destiny still has a lot going for it. The ideas of the Raids and just how this game feels is great. But it's missing so many things it could be doing. Why even bother buying a ship when it's just a load screen? Why isn't the loot as solid as Borderlands or Diablo or something.
I feel like when the inevitable Destiny 2 shows up, these concerns will be gone. We will pilot a ship, even if it's just to get to a different planet and that's it, and we will have a much more connected experience when it comes to players and how you load into select missions. I think they are good on having a cool world (they should put the lore IN the game though so we can all enjoy it while we play instead of outside exposure), their mechanics are great - they just need more depth. Give us more abilities maybe? Something outside of the grenade and a melee?
Content - that's what we are missing in a nutshell, but it's not just "we need more levels to play". That won't solve what's wrong with Destiny; but they need to flesh out what they have and structure it in a better way.
I still think that Destiny is a good game, I don't want to dog on it, but it could have been so much more than it is. When I do jump in the game and just play a mission really quick, I enjoy the gameplay a lot. The game feels really great. The combat feels fluid, fast, and solid all 'round. Here is hoping that perhaps in 2016, we get that Destiny we thought we were getting and it blows us away.
