It just dawned on me. The Borealis in which you will be going to in Half life 2: Episode 3 is a time machine!
Err.."Portal" machine.
A portal is a gateway. Aperture science was big on portals (Hence, the portal gun)
The Borealis is a portal that can transport you back in time, or to the future (Think Time traveling DeLorean)
Half life 2 is going to end by Gordon Freeman entering that Portal and going back to when he is pushing the Crystal into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer! Which caused a resonance cascade, the Combine invading earth, and humanity's struggle against the combine in the "7 Hour War" which ultimately ended up being humanity losing and being enslaved.
He's going to stop any of that from happening. He's not going to push the Crystal into Anti-Mass Spectrometer! He'll warn everyone of what will happen to the planet if he does so, and stop it all from happening.
Essentially saving humanity!
It all makes sense now!
This is a pretty far fetched theory, but we won't know for sure until the game is released.
