Ryan’s Classics – Blaster Master (NES)

The Nintendo Entertainment System had so many side scrolling games released during its lifespan.  Most of them were horrible games but many were great games, Blaster Master is one of those great games.

From its cover you would have no idea what kind of game it is.  Once you start the game the story starts, and it talks of your frog that escapes into a nuclear waste container and then a giant hole.  Once you drop into the hole, there is a tank that can help you along the way to save your frog.

The game then truly starts, and surprisingly it is a sidescroller with a jumping tank.  On top of the tank platforming, there are almost dungeon crawling parts where you can leave the tank.  If that wasn’t enough, the game has a MetroidVania style with its stage progression.

The game was very challenging when I first tried playing it as a child and the difficulty curve has stood rather still over time.

Original Score – 7 out of 10

Present Score – 7 out of 10
