I like when a game can provide more than one style of gameplay. I remember when my friend introduced me to Guardian Legend by Broderbund. We were in his basement with his top loader NES and the moment he turned it on I was blown away.
The menu music is absolutely amazing. It is such an epic good feeling song. Once you start that actual game you are treated with a vertical shmup. It controls so well and the music is great. Once you beat the boss you are then on a space station in a game that plays similar to The Legend of Zelda. Each level alternates between the shmup and top down adventure game.
Now, growing up I was never very good at games. I knew how to do Mario and other platformers, but when the game required some more thought to it, I was never that good. I never made it past the first station as a kid, nor as a teenager. I find this game really interesting and difficult, as I have only made it to the second space station. I do remember the code my friend shared with me on that first day. If you enter all J’s as the code, you end up on the last level with all the weapons. I still can’t beat it with that code. Even though I’ll probably never beat this game, it is so good.
